- Pisac: is a town that houses an impressive archaeological complex on top of a mountain, and a very popular handicraft market.
- Moray: is an archaeological site that features a system of circular terraces, used by the Incas as agricultural laboratories.
- Maras: is a fascinating site where you will see the pre-Hispanic and colonial salt mines, which are still used to produce salt.
- Chinchero: is a town with a rich history and culture, where you will see impressive colonial buildings and Inca ruins.
What is the Archaeological Center of Ollantaytambo like?
The Archaeological Center of Ollantaytambo is one of the most impressive places in the Sacred Valley of the Incas. It was built during the Inca Empire and is a fortress and citadel that sits on a steep mountain, with impressive agricultural terraces at the base and a complex of temples and houses at the top.
In addition to the structures, Ollantaytambo also features a system of water canals that fed the agricultural terraces at the base of the hill, which allowed the Incas to grow a large amount of food in a mountainous area.
What is the Pisaq Archaeological Center like?
The Archaeological Center of Pisaq is located in the Sacred Valley of the Incas, approximately 33 kilometers from the city of Cusco. It is one of the most important archaeological sites in the region, combining impressive panoramic views with a rich Inca history and culture.
The site is composed of a series of Inca agricultural terraces, temples, fortresses and a complex system of water canals and aqueducts. One of the most impressive features of the Pisaq Archaeological Center are the agricultural terraces, built on the slopes of the mountains in the form of an amphitheater. These terraces were used by the Incas to grow a variety of crops, from potatoes and corn to quinoa and beans.
What is the best time to visit the Sacred Valley of the Incas?
The high season for tourism in the Sacred Valley of the Incas is during the months of May to September, since during this period there is less rainfall and temperatures are more moderate. In addition, it is during this period when important festivities such as the Inti Raymi, festival of the sun, are celebrated.
However, some visitors prefer to visit the Sacred Valley of the Incas in the low season, which runs from November to March, since during this time there are fewer tourists and prices for lodging and transportation are usually cheaper.
Is a special permit needed to visit Machu Picchu?
To enter Machu Picchu, it is necessary to have an entrance or entrance ticket that can be purchased online or in the city of Cusco.
Entrance is included in most tours to Machu Picchu, so visitors do not have to worry about obtaining the entrance ticket on their own. However, if you decide to visit Machu Picchu on your own, you should obtain the entrance ticket in advance to avoid problems. It is important to keep in mind that the daily capacity of visitors is limited, so it is recommended to make a reservation in advance, especially during the high season months.
Is it possible to climb the Huayna Picchu mountain during the visit to Machu Picchu?
Yes, it is possible to climb Huayna Picchu Mountain during the visit to Machu Picchu, but a separate entrance ticket is required and must be purchased in advance, as the number of visitors allowed per day is limited and they sell out quickly. The hike is steep and demanding, but the views from the top are breathtaking and well worth it. There is also an alternative option of climbing Machu Picchu Mountain, which also requires a separate ticket and offers equally impressive views of the Inca citadel.
Can I bring food and beverages to Machu Picchu?
No food or beverages are allowed into Machu Picchu, except water in small bottles without lids. There is also a designated area for eating and drinking near the entrance to the archaeological site. It is recommended to bring snacks and enough water for the hike to Machu Picchu, but they should be left before entering the site.
What is Aguas Calientes like?
Aguas Calientes, also known as Machu Picchu Pueblo, is a small town located in the Urubamba River valley near Machu Picchu. It is the starting point for most visitors who want to visit Machu Picchu, as it is where the train stations and access to the buses that take visitors to the entrance of Machu Picchu are located.
Aguas Calientes has a vibrant tourist atmosphere and is a fairly small town. There are a variety of hotels, restaurants, cafes, bars, souvenir stores and travel agencies to cater to visitors. Due to its location in a mountainous area, the city has many stairs and steep streets, but also offers breathtaking panoramic views of the surrounding area.
In addition to serving as a base for visitors to Machu Picchu, Aguas Calientes has some tourist attractions of its own, such as the hot springs that give the town its name, a small historic church and some nearby Inca ruins.
