Frequently Asked Questions from Travelers
What is the altitude of Cusco
The city of Cusco is located at an altitude of approximately 3,400 meters above sea level. Cusco is known for being one of the highest cities in the world and its altitude can affect people who are not used to high altitudes. Therefore, it is important for visitors to take measures to prevent altitude sickness, such as getting enough rest, drinking plenty of water and avoiding strenuous physical activity when arriving in the city.
Is a special permit needed to visit Machu Picchu?
To enter Machu Picchu, it is necessary to have a ticket or entrance ticket that can be purchased online or in the city of Cusco.
Entrance is included in most tours to Machu Picchu, so visitors do not have to worry about obtaining the entrance ticket on their own. However, if you decide to visit Machu Picchu on your own, you should obtain the entrance ticket in advance to avoid problems. It is important to keep in mind that the daily capacity of visitors is limited, so it is recommended to make a reservation in advance, especially during the high season months.
Is it possible to climb the Huayna Picchu mountain during the visit to Machu Picchu?
Yes, it is possible to climb Huayna Picchu Mountain during the visit to Machu Picchu, but a separate entrance ticket is required and must be purchased in advance, as the number of visitors allowed per day is limited and they sell out quickly. The hike is steep and demanding, but the views from the top are breathtaking and well worth it. There is also an alternative option of climbing Machu Picchu Mountain, which also requires a separate ticket and offers equally impressive views of the Inca citadel.
Is it necessary to acclimatize before visiting Cusco due to the altitude?
It is advisable to acclimatize before visiting Cusco due to the high altitude of the city. Cusco is located at an altitude of approximately 3,400 meters above sea level, which can cause soroche or altitude sickness in some people. Symptoms of altitude sickness can include headache, nausea, dizziness and shortness of breath.
To avoid altitude sickness, it is recommended to take a day or two to acclimatize before engaging in intense physical activities, such as walking or hiking. During this time, it is advisable to rest, stay hydrated, avoid consuming alcohol and heavy food, and drink coca tea, which is a natural remedy to alleviate the symptoms of soroche.
What is the weather like in Cusco?
The climate in Cusco is cool and dry for much of the year, with daytime temperatures ranging between 15 and 20 degrees Celsius. However, due to the altitude, Cusco has a wide temperature variation between day and night, with nighttime temperatures that can drop below 5 degrees Celsius.
The climate in Cusco is divided into two main seasons: the dry season and the rainy season. The dry season extends from May to October and is considered the best time to visit Cusco due to its sunny and dry climate. The rainy season runs from November to April and is more humid and rainy, especially during the months of January and February.
Can I bring food and beverages to Machu Picchu?
No food or beverages are allowed into Machu Picchu, except water in small, uncapped bottles. There is also a designated area for eating and drinking near the entrance to the archaeological site. It is recommended to bring snacks and enough water for the hike to Machu Picchu, but they should be left before entering the site.
What is Aguas Calientes like?
Aguas Calientes, also known as Machu Picchu Pueblo, is a small town located in the Urubamba River valley, near Machu Picchu. It is the starting point for most visitors who want to visit Machu Picchu, as it is where the train stations and access to the buses that take visitors to the entrance of Machu Picchu are located.
Aguas Calientes has a vibrant tourist atmosphere and is a fairly small town. There are a variety of hotels, restaurants, cafes, bars, souvenir stores and travel agencies to cater to visitors. Due to its location in a mountainous area, the city has many stairs and steep streets, but also offers breathtaking panoramic views of the surrounding area.
In addition to serving as a base for visitors to Machu Picchu, Aguas Calientes has some tourist attractions of its own, such as the hot springs that give the town its name, a small historic church and some nearby Inca ruins.
Where is the Huayna Picchu?
Huayna Picchu is a mountain located in Machu Picchu. It is located north of the archaeological site of Machu Picchu and is one of the most iconic mountains in the area.
The climb to the top of Huayna Picchu is a popular activity for visitors to Machu Picchu, as it offers a breathtaking panoramic view of the archaeological site and the surrounding area. However, the ascent is quite steep and can be challenging for some visitors, so it is recommended to be in good physical condition and take the necessary precautions to enjoy the experience safely.
