Frequently Asked Questions from Travelers

What is the altitude of Cusco?

The city of Cusco is located at an altitude of approximately 3,400 meters above sea level. Cusco is known for being one of the highest cities in the world and its altitude can affect people who are not used to high altitudes. Therefore, it is important for visitors to take measures to prevent altitude sickness, such as getting enough rest, drinking plenty of water and avoiding strenuous physical activity when arriving in the city.

Is previous experience required to do the Montaña de Colores tour?

No previous experience is required to do the Montaña de Colores Full Day tour. However, it is important to keep in mind that the tour involves a hike of approximately 4 hours, with an altitude of up to 5,200 meters above sea level. Therefore, it is important to be in good physical shape and be prepared to walk on uneven terrain. In addition, it is advisable to bring appropriate clothing and footwear for the hike, as well as a bottle of water and sunscreen. If you have any particular concerns, it is always advisable to consult with the travel agency before booking.

Why does the Vinicunca mountain have 7 colors?

The colors of the Vinicunca mountain, also known as the mountain of the Seven Colors or Rainbow mountain, are due to the presence of different minerals and sediments in its rocks. The accumulation of these materials over millions of years, and their subsequent exposure by geological movements, generated a spectacular combination of stripes and bands of colors. Green is due to copper, brown to clay, yellow to limonite, red to hematite and purple to copper sulfate.

What level of physical fitness is required to do the 7-color mountain trek?

The 7-color mountain trek requires a moderate to high level of physical fitness, as it is a hike of approximately 5 hours (round trip) over uneven and steep trails, at a high altitude that can exceed 5,000 meters above sea level at some points. In addition, the weather can be unpredictable and vary rapidly, which adds an additional factor of difficulty and requires good physical and mental preparation.

When can I find snow on Vinicunca Mountain?

The Vinicunca mountain, also known as the mountain of the 7 colors, is located at a high altitude that can exceed 5,000 meters above sea level at some points. The presence of snow on the mountain can vary depending on the season and weather conditions.

The rainy season in the Cusco region runs from November to April. During this period, snowfall is more likely to occur in the higher elevations of the mountain. However, the presence of snow is not guaranteed, as it depends on many factors such as temperature, humidity and precipitation.

What is the best time of the year to do the Full Day Color Mountain Tour?

The best time to do the Montaña de Colores Full Day Tour is during the dry season in Cusco, which runs from May to September. During this period, the weather is drier and sunnier, which makes it more comfortable to hike and enjoy the panoramic views of the Colored Mountain. In addition, during these months, there is less chance of rain and snowfall, which means that the hike will be safer and more enjoyable. However, it is important to keep in mind that due to the high altitude of the mountain, temperatures can be cold, even during the dry season. It is advisable to bring warm clothing and extra layers to adapt to temperature changes throughout the day.

Is it necessary to acclimatize before visiting Cusco due to the altitude?

It is advisable to acclimatize before visiting Cusco due to the high altitude of the city. Cusco is located at an altitude of approximately 3,400 meters above sea level, which can cause soroche or altitude sickness in some people. Symptoms of altitude sickness can include headache, nausea, dizziness and shortness of breath.

To avoid altitude sickness, it is recommended to take a day or two to acclimatize before engaging in intense physical activities, such as walking or hiking. During this time, it is advisable to rest, stay hydrated, avoid consuming alcohol and heavy food, and drink coca tea, which is a natural remedy to alleviate the symptoms of soroche.

What is the climate like in Cusco?

The climate in Cusco is cool and dry for much of the year, with daytime temperatures ranging between 15 and 20 degrees Celsius. However, due to the altitude, Cusco has a wide temperature variation between day and night, with nighttime temperatures that can drop below 5 degrees Celsius.

The climate in Cusco is divided into two main seasons: the dry season and the rainy season. The dry season extends from May to October and is considered the best time to visit Cusco due to its sunny and dry climate. The rainy season extends from November to April and is more humid and rainy, especially during the months of January and February.
