Frequently asked questions from travelers

What are the main places to visit on a City Tour in Cusco?

The main places that are visited on a City Tour are:

  • Plaza de Armas of Cusco: It is the main square of the city and is surrounded by colonial and religious buildings, such as the Cathedral of Cusco and the Church of the Society of Jesus.
  • Qorikancha: It is an Inca temple dedicated to the Sun god that was covered by the Spanish colonial architecture during the time of the conquest.
  • Sacsayhuaman: It is an impressive Inca fortress located on top of a hill that offers stunning views of the city of Cusco.
  • Qenqo: It is an archaeological site that contains a series of channels carved into the rock that are believed to have been used for religious ceremonies.
  • Tambomachay: It is an Inca sacred place where it is believed that purification rituals were performed.

What is the best time to do a City Tour in Cusco?

The best time to do a City Tour in Cusco is during the dry season, which runs from May to September. During these months, the weather is more stable and dry, which makes it more pleasant to walk along the city streets and visit the tourist places. In addition, the amount of rainfall decreases significantly, which reduces the risk of cancellations due to weather.

What is the Qoricancha Inca Temple like?

The Temple of the Sun, also known as Qoricancha, was one of the most sacred and outstanding temples of the Inca Empire. It is located in the city of Cusco, in the Andean region of Peru, and was built in honor of the Inca deity of the sun, Inti, during the reign of the Inca Pachacutec in the fifteenth century.

The temple was renowned for its magnificent architecture and decoration, which included walls covered with gold and silver, as well as gardens with various plants and flowers. It also housed a huge amount of gold and silver objects, which were stolen by the Spanish conquistadors during the colonial era.

Currently, much of the original structure of the temple has been destroyed, being replaced by the colonial church of Santo Domingo, built on the foundations of the Inca temple. However, some original walls of the temple and parts of its architecture can still be appreciated. In addition, you can see some of the gold and silver objects on display at the Qoricancha Museum.

What's Sacsayhuamán like?

Sacsayhuaman is an Inca fortress located on the hill of the city of Cusco. The construction of this structure dates back to the XV century, during the reign of the Inca Pachacútec, and is considered one of the greatest architectural works of the Inca culture.

The fortress has three parallel walls, each of which has a height of more than 9 meters. The walls are formed by large perfectly fitted stone blocks that create a smooth and seamless surface. The whole of the walls forms a zigzag of about 300 meters long and 20 meters wide.

Do I need a special permit to visit Machu Picchu?

To enter Machu Picchu, it is necessary to have an entrance or entrance ticket that can be purchased online or in the city of Cusco.

The entrance fee is included in most Machu Picchu tours, so visitors do not have to worry about getting the entrance ticket on their own. However, if you decide to visit Machu Picchu on your own, you will need to get the entrance ticket in advance to avoid problems. It is important to keep in mind that the daily capacity of visitors is limited, so it is recommended to make a reservation in advance, especially during the high-season months.

Is it possible to climb the Huayna Picchu Mountain during the visit to Machu Picchu?

Yes, it is possible to climb the Huayna Picchu Mountain during the visit to Machu Picchu, but a separate entrance ticket is required that must be purchased in advance, since the number of visitors allowed per day is limited and they sell out quickly. The hike is steep and demanding, but the views from the top are breathtaking and worth it. There is also an alternative option of climbing the Machu Picchu mountain, which also requires a separate ticket and offers equally stunning views of the Inca citadel.

Can I bring food and drinks to Machu Picchu?

No food or drinks are allowed to enter Machu Picchu, except water in small bottles and without a lid. There is also a designated area for eating and drinking near the entrance of the archaeological site. It is recommended to bring snacks and enough water for the trek to Machu Picchu, but they should be left before entering the site.

What's Aguas Calientes like?

Aguas Calientes, also known as Machu Picchu Pueblo, is a small town located in the valley of the Urubamba River, near Machu Picchu. It is the starting point for most visitors who want to visit Machu Picchu, as it is where the train stations and access to the buses that take visitors to the entrance of Machu Picchu are located.

Aguas Calientes has a vibrant tourist atmosphere and is a fairly small city. There is a wide variety of hotels, restaurants, cafes, bars, souvenir shops and travel agencies to cater to visitors. Due to its location in a mountainous area, the city has many stairs and steep streets, but also offers stunning panoramic views of the surroundings.

In addition to serving as a base for visitors to Machu Picchu, Aguas Calientes has some tourist attractions of its own, such as the hot springs that give the city its name, a small historical church and some nearby Inca ruins.
