Frequently Asked Questions from Travelers
The main places to visit on a City Tour are:
- Plaza de Armas of Cusco: It is the main square of the city and is surrounded by colonial and religious buildings, such as the Cathedral of Cusco and the Church of La Compañía de Jesús.
- Qorikancha: It is an Inca temple dedicated to the Sun God that was covered by Spanish colonial architecture during the time of the conquest.
- Sacsayhuaman: It is an impressive Inca fortress located on top of a hill that offers impressive views of the city of Cusco.
- Qenqo: It is an archaeological site that contains a series of canals carved into the rock that are believed to have been used for religious ceremonies.
- Tambomachay: It is a sacred Inca site where it is believed that purification rituals were performed.
The best time to take a City Tour in Cusco is during the dry season, which runs from May to September. During these months, the weather is more stable and dry, which makes it more pleasant to walk the streets of the city and visit the tourist sites. In addition, the amount of rainfall decreases significantly, which reduces the risk of cancellations due to weather.
What is the Inca temple Qoricancha like?
The Temple of the Sun, also known as Qoricancha, was one of the most sacred and outstanding temples of the Inca Empire. It is located in the city of Cusco, in the Andean region of Peru, and was built in honor of the Inca deity of the sun, Inti, during the reign of the Inca Pachacutec in the 15th century.
The temple was renowned for its magnificent architecture and decoration, which included walls covered in gold and silver, as well as gardens with various plants and flowers. It also housed an enormous amount of gold and silver objects, which were stripped by the Spanish conquistadors during the colonial era.
Currently, much of the original structure of the temple has been destroyed, being replaced by the colonial church of Santo Domingo, built on the foundations of the Inca temple. However, some of the original walls of the temple and parts of its architecture can still be seen. In addition, you can see some of the gold and silver objects on display at the Qoricancha Museum.
What is Sacsayhuaman like?
Sacsayhuaman is an Inca fortress located on the hill of the city of Cusco. The construction of this structure dates back to the 15th century, during the reign of the Inca Pachacutec, and is considered one of the greatest architectural works of the Inca culture.
The fortress has three parallel walls, each of which has a height of more than 9 meters. The walls are formed by large blocks of stone perfectly fitted together to create a smooth, seamless surface. The walls together form a zigzag of about 300 meters long and 20 meters wide.
To enter Machu Picchu, it is necessary to have an entrance or entrance ticket that can be purchased online or in the city of Cusco.
Entrance is included in most tours to Machu Picchu, so visitors do not have to worry about obtaining the entrance ticket on their own. However, if you decide to visit Machu Picchu on your own, you should obtain the entrance ticket in advance to avoid problems. It is important to keep in mind that the daily capacity of visitors is limited, so it is recommended to make a reservation in advance, especially during the high season months.
Is it possible to climb the Huayna Picchu mountain during the visit to Machu Picchu?
Yes, it is possible to climb Huayna Picchu Mountain during the visit to Machu Picchu, but a separate entrance ticket is required and must be purchased in advance, as the number of visitors allowed per day is limited and they sell out quickly. The hike is steep and demanding, but the views from the top are breathtaking and well worth it. There is also an alternative option of climbing Machu Picchu Mountain, which also requires a separate ticket and offers equally impressive views of the Inca citadel.
Can I bring food and drinks to Machu Picchu?
No food or beverages are allowed into Machu Picchu, except water in small, uncapped bottles. There is also a designated area for eating and drinking near the entrance to the archaeological site. It is recommended to bring snacks and enough water for the hike to Machu Picchu, but they should be left before entering the site.
What is Aguas Calientes like?
Aguas Calientes, also known as Machu Picchu Pueblo, is a small town located in the Urubamba River valley near Machu Picchu. It is the starting point for most visitors who want to visit Machu Picchu, as it is where the train stations and access to the buses that take visitors to the entrance of Machu Picchu are located.
Aguas Calientes has a vibrant tourist atmosphere and is a fairly small town. There are a variety of hotels, restaurants, cafes, bars, souvenir stores and travel agencies to cater to visitors. Due to its location in a mountainous area, the city has many stairs and steep streets, but also offers breathtaking panoramic views of the surrounding area.
In addition to serving as a base for visitors to Machu Picchu, Aguas Calientes has some tourist attractions of its own, such as the hot springs that give the town its name, a small historic church and some nearby Inca ruins.
