Cusco is known as one of the highest cities in the world, and its altitude can affect people who are not accustomed to high altitudes. Therefore, it is important for visitors to take measures to prevent altitude sickness, such as resting enough, drinking plenty of water, and avoiding intense physical activity upon arrival in the city.
Is it necessary to acclimate before visiting Cusco due to the altitude?
It is recommended to acclimate before visiting Cusco due to the city’s high altitude. Cusco is located at an altitude of approximately 3,400 meters above sea level, which can cause altitude sickness or “soroche” in some people. Symptoms of altitude sickness may include headaches, nausea, dizziness, and difficulty breathing.
To avoid altitude sickness, it is recommended to take one or two days to acclimate before engaging in intense physical activities such as walking or hiking. During this time, it is recommended to rest, stay hydrated, avoid alcohol and heavy foods, and drink coca tea, which is a natural remedy to alleviate the symptoms of soroche.

The citadel also features a series of important buildings, including a temple and a central plaza.
