Why is Machu Picchu so famous?

Machu Picchu is one of the most enigmatic structures of the Inca civilization. Its perfectly fitted stone walls, built without mortar, have withstood earthquakes and centuries of erosion. Its strategic location on top of a mountain makes it nearly invisible from the valley, which may have served as protection.

Additionally, the site features temples, plazas, agricultural terraces, and advanced drainage systems that showcase the ingenuity of the Incas. Its fame is also due to the mystical energy that many travelers feel when visiting, as well as the breathtaking views of the cloud forest and surrounding mountains.

Location and altitude

Machu Picchu is located in the Cusco region, in the province of Urubamba, on the Peruvian Andes mountain range. Its altitude is 2,430 meters above sea level, placing it in an intermediate zone between the highlands and the cloud forest.

Its geographical coordinates are: -13.1631, -72.5450.

The citadel is situated between two mountains: Huayna Picchu, which rises above the city and offers a spectacular view, and Machu Picchu Mountain, which gives the area its name. This strategic location allowed the Incas to control trade and communication routes in the region.
